Contributed by Gordon Anderson.
Also
new is a UK publication from the 40s entitled 'Scientific
Bodyculture' by Ian MacQueen who is now President of the Oscar Heidenstam
Foundation.
August 2nd 2002
A new
section on Bernarr Macfadden has now
been added and contains a reproduction of one of his earliest and probably his
best book 'Muscular Power & Beauty'.
This is an exceptionally well illustrated book on Resistance Exercises.

At lomg last the famous Farmer
Burns course of Lessons in Wrestling & Physical Culture is now on the
website. This is courtesy of Gordon Anderson. Dont miss your chance to see this
rare publication.
July 14th 2002
Another
excellent contribution from Gordon Anderson. This is a 1924 brochure from Charles
Atlas entitled 'Secrets of Muscular

Crosswinds seems to have stabilised
so currently all visits to this site are being redirected to http://sandow.crosswinds.net.
Hopefully it will stay there!
June 3rd
2002
Some additional photos of the Saxon Brothers
have been added to a new section called Saxon
Scrapbook.
The experimental mirror
site has been a bit of a 'Curate's Egg' (please email if you do not know what
this means!). Crosswinds have had periods of shutdown due to equipment failure.
At present the mirror is off as I'm waiting for them to change the site name to
sandow.crosswinds instead of sandow2. At this moment you should be looking at
the sandow.plus.com pages.
May 28th 2002
As
an experiment, visitors to the Sandow Plus site are being transferred to a mirror
URL which is www.sandow2.crosswinds.net. The original Sandow Plus ISP which is
Plusnet have both limits on webspace and bandwidth. The first is getting perilously
close as the site increases in size and the second has been exceeded causing the
threat of financial penalties from the ISP. Crosswinds who are in Canada are unlimited
on both. Crosswinds are slightly more unreliable in as much as they occasionally
go down. The situation will be closely monitored over the next few months. Any
direct links that you may have or that appear in other websites, message boards
etc. will still take you to the Plusnet URL. Only the main URL www.sandow.plus.com
will transfer. Please advise if there are ANY problems.
You

Saldo. Contributed by John Haywood.

A
long awaited (by me at least) section on Otto
Arco is now open. Courtesy of Gay W. Ng we now have a series of articles from
Body Molding Magazine 1925 including a 4 part well illustrated series entitled
'How to Learn Muscle Control' written in conjunction with Alan Calvert. This is
currently under construction - parts 3 and 4 of the above still to go but plenty
there to be going on with.
March 12th 2002
Probably
one of the 'best' Charles Atlas finds for quite a while. 'Building
the Physique of a Greek God' by Angelo Siciliano was written by Atlas for
Physical Culture Magazine - November 1921 - The year he won the 'World's Most
Handsome Man' Competition. This is almost certainly pre-Tilney and most definitely
pre-Roman as there is no mention of a course. Athough
it was probably ghosted there are still some revealing statements in the article.
Thanks to Gordon Anderson for securing this article.
March
11th 2002
I'm pleased to advise of an absolutely fascinating
article written especially for this website. In 2001 Vinaya
Kumar met Monohar Aich, then nearly 89. In this article, which is well illustrated
with published and personal photos, Vinaya tells of this meeting and of an amazing
display of strength and muscle control. This is a 'must-read'
March
10th 2002
Another contribution from Vinaya Kumar. This
is a selection of pages from The Encyclopedia
of Indian Physical Culture - 1950 and shows Nals (Stone Dumb-Bells), Sumtola
(Indian Barbells), Stone Ball Lifting, Stone Wheels, Ekka & Karela (Heavy
Clubs) and Gada (Maces). These are all traditional Indian Bodybuilding tools and
there are plenty of illustrations as well as exercises for the adventurous!
March
3rd 2002
Article from Muscle Power April/May 1946 - Sandow - My Impressions when First We
Met - by Earle Liederman
February
24th
Several small additions. Some more photos
of Monohar Aich, courtesy of Vinaya Kumar. These are now in a proper Picture
Gallery.

Saxon Trio.

Pedley who was Sandow's Chief Trainer at St. James's.
February
20th 2002
Many changes and additions today. The Tony
Sansone section has been revamped and as well as some reorganisation a new
Picture Gallery (currently 34 pictures) has been added. A slideshow feature is
available on the gallery.
Following on from a not inconsiderable amount of
material that has come from Vinaya Kumar, with more to follow, a complete new
section has been added devoted to Body Building &
Muscle Control in India. Some of this was alread on site but a new addition
is a section on Prof. K.V. Iyer. Considering
how big Bodybuilding was and is in India it remarkable that there is virtually
nothing about it on the Internet. There will soon be sections on Monohar Aich
& Monotosh Roy, India's two biggest bodybuilding names from the 50s. The remarkable
article with pictures of Prof. Chandrashekhar has been copied over from the Maxalding site.
February
18th 2002
An entirely new section devoted to the legendary W.A.Pullum.
Currently this section contains magazine articles by and about him and a full
reproduction of his book 'Weighlifting
Made Easy & Interesting' first published in 1922. The articles come courtesy
of Gil Waldron and the book from Ron Tyrrell. Work now commences on another rare
book by Pullum.

Course from the Woodward School of Physical Culture in Blackpool, UK

Something
quite different this time. Catherine Hunter has unearthed a full page advert from
a 1912 edition of the Daily Telegraph - a London broadsheet newspaper. This advert 'A Remarkable Threefold Health Offer' included details of a set of previously unknown Sandow publications - 'The Illustrated
Health Library'.
January 20th 2002
Another
excellent contribution from Vinaya Kumar - Barbell
Exercises by Chit Tun. This is a well illustrated book written in 1926 by
a noted Burmese Strongman & Muscle Controller who moved to India at the turn
of the last century.

1930. Many thanks to Vinaya Kumar for this contribution. Keep watching as the
pages are added.

rivalled Sandow for physique
but was not a 'strong man'. If you want find
out why and see a collection of photos of
him - read on!

Support being added for Netscape users.
Netscape doesn't seem to like the 'hotspots' that are embedded on most of the
'index' pages within this site. For users of Netscape (Windows & MAC) there
will be alternate indexes to allow navigation to chapters of the books. These
are being introduced one-by-one starting with 'Bodybuilding'.
